The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is an independent civilian oversight agency that monitors and audits the Oakland Police Department’s (OPD) policies, practices and procedures. The mission of the OIG is to ensure accountability, enhance community trust, and increase transparency via fair and thorough assessments of OPD’s compliance with the law and departmental policies.
As the Inspector General you will manage and oversee the day-to-day functions of the Office of the Inspector General which includes managing the Deputy Inspector General, the Chief of Audits and Evaluations, the IG Policy Analyst and other staff. The Inspector General is the Department Head and required to present at Police Commission meetings and City Council meetings.
OPD Internal Affairs Division (IAD) and the Community Police Review Agency (CPRA) fall under the jurisdiction of the OIG, which includes performance audits of OPD and CPRA operations, strategic planning, reviews of complaint intake process and/or systems for CPRA and IAD; oversight and training of staff; final review of all reports, findings, analysis and recommendations; and public presentations of OIG reports to stakeholders as well as the members of the public.
