In 2020, Oaklanders voted with a resounding majority (81% of the vote) to pass Measure S1, establishing the Office of the Inspector General (IG) to strengthen police accountability. Reporting to the Oakland Police Commission, the IG’s role is to ensure that the Oakland Police Department (OPD) operates at the highest standards, adheres to its policies, and upholds constitutional policing practices. The IG is also tasked with reviewing and investigating how the City of Oakland handles police misconduct by overseeing the work of the Community Police Review Agency (CPRA) and monitoring OPD’s compliance with federal reforms.
This is our second search for an Inspector General, and the responsibility for finding and hiring the IG falls to the Oakland Police Commission. An Ad Hoc Committee of three Commissioners—Chair Emeritus Jackson, Chair Carpenter Peterson, and Vice Chair Ricardo Garcia-Acosta—have been diligently screening potential candidates.
