OPD NEWS:
Monday morning marked Oakland’s second consecutive year of triple-digit homicides. Since last Monday, Oakland has experienced 10 homicides, with four occurring in the last three days. Monday’s homicide took place in the 7200 block of San Leandro Street, just after 10:30 AM.
Over the weekend, OPD Homicide Section investigated three homicides in 13 hours. The first homicide occurred just after 11:00 PM Saturday, in the 2300 block of Legion Avenue. OPD patrol officers responded to a report of a ShotSpotter activation. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male Oakland resident suffering from gunshot wound(s). The victim died at the scene.
The second incident happened a few hours later, at 2:15 AM Sunday, in the 300 block of 17th Street. Officers responded after hearing gunshots in the area. Upon arrival, officers located several victims who had sustained one or more gunshot wounds. One of the victims, a male adult resident of Stockton, was transported to an area hospital where he died.
Later that day, the third homicide occurred just after 12:30 PM, in the 2300 block of Humboldt Avenue. Officers responded to a report of a ShotSpotter activation. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male Oakland resident suffering from gunshot wound(s). The victim died at the scene.
The victim’s identities are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The Oakland Police Department (OPD) recently reassigned additional officers to the Homicide Section to aid in the investigation of the City’s 100 homicides.
“We’ve been successful arresting those that have committed homicides in our city,” said Chief LeRonne L. Armstrong. “But that is not the outcome we are looking for, we would much rather people put down guns and not cause this violence in our community.”
Chief Armstrong is partnering with Oakland’s faith-based organizations, as well as meeting with the Violent Crime Operations Center (VCOC), and Ceasefire Division Commanders to reallocate officers to the areas that are most impacted by violence. OPD’s intelligence is focusing on those people we know who have been involved in shootings. Investigators are actively following up on those investigations.
