For Immediate Release June 12, 2024
OPD News:
The Oakland Police Department (OPD) announced the arrests of multiple individuals involved in home invasion robberies, commercial robberies, and burglaries.
32-year-old Derrick Behrens is responsible for four home invasion robberies in Oakland’s Highland Park neighborhood, occurring between April 12 and April 30 of this year.
Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our Crime Analysis Unit, Criminal Investigation Division (CID) Investigators, Crime Reduction Teams (CRT), Community Resource Officers (CRO), and Patrol Officers, Behrens was safely taken into custody on May 5, 2024.
A search warrant executed at Behrens’ residence led to the recovery of multiple items of evidence connected to the home invasion robberies. The case was presented to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, resulting in charges against Behrens.
OPD has also seen a rise in commercial burglaries and robberies since January of this year. That’s when a group of underage individuals stole cash registers from businesses and committed armed robberies in East Oakland.
Their latest crime spree occurred on May 29, 2024, when the group committed at least a half-dozen commercial burglaries and robberies along Hegenberger Road, International Boulevard, and MacArthur Boulevard between the hours of 4:30 a.m. and 5:15 a.m. In all, these juveniles are responsible for more than 30 commercial burglaries and armed robberies in Oakland, as well as more than 20 commercial burglaries and robberies in surrounding Bay Area cities.
All four juveniles, who are 17 years old, were arrested by OPD and charged by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. All are currently being held in the Alameda County Juvenile Hall.
“While we have seen a decrease in the overall number of violent crimes identified, our work is far from complete, says Oakland Police Chief Floyd Mitchell. I’m grateful to our community members and law enforcement partners, who play a pivotal role in partnering with OPD in our pursuit to make Oakland safer. I also want to thank our officers for their commitment and dedication to continuing the work.”
