Coliseum Sale statement (Sept 4, 2024)

September 4, 2024

The $105 million deal the City of @Oakland just finalized with the African American Sports & Entertainment Group (@AASEGOakland) is a win for Oakland, and the beginning of Oakland’s boom loop. With this deal, we are cementing the developer’s commitments to East Oakland and beyond through economic development, affordable housing, job and business opportunity, and other community benefits.

Now that the deal is done and the ink is dry, AASEG is making payments to the City for the sale. This deal prevents reckless cuts to city services and community safety. Instead, the balanced budget approved by the City Council majority in July will continue to fund our comprehensive community safety infrastructure with: 678 officer positions, 9-1-1 dispatchers, uninterrupted fire and medical services, as well as expanding our successful Ceasefire violence interruption program and supporting more community ambassadors in business corridors across Oakland.

We will continue to tackle our decades-in-the-making structural deficit and ensure city government functions are more efficient and effective by working with the Administration to consolidate departments, streamline city functions, and increase revenue – creating financial sustainability so that the City is in a better position for the next biennial budget.

Let’s move forward and work together on the solutions that will benefit our beloved Oakland and our region.
