Hello Neighbor,

On June 15, 2021, the Oakland City Council unanimously approved Councilmember Carroll Fife’s resolution to commemorate Ms. King by renaming 2nd Street between Broadway & Franklin Street as “Dorothy King Way.” This resolution furthers the Council’s efforts to celebrate the profoundly positive and far reaching impact Dorothy King had on the City of Oakland

I was honored to have shared some words at the Homegoing service for the amazing Dorothy King, who was, and forever will be, an Oakland icon. Ms. King lived her life committed to social justice, and she was an advocate for the homeless and formerly incarcerated communities. At the March 29, 2021, Oakland City Council meeting, I introduced a unanimously passed resolution to honor her life and legacy, as well as declare June 25th as Dorothy King Day in the City of Oakland.

Reminder Special Budget Council Meeting

Today, Council President Bas and her budget team will share the Council President’s budget amendments at a Special Council meeting. I have submitted an amendment to save our school crossing guards.

I was very concerned to hear from community members that the Mayor’s Proposed Budget cuts 40% of our school crossing guards. At the June 17, 2021, Special Council Meeting, I will be fighting to keep these positions, using additional funding I discovered! School Crossing Guards play a vital role in the lives of children and families. There are over 150 schools in the City of Oakland, currently, 52 of which have crossing guards in 67 established School Crossing Guard posts. In the administration’s FY 2021-23 budget plan, they propose to cut 13.5 FTE crossing guards, which totals about 30 part-time positions. At a time where we have seen an increase in unsafe driving on our streets, and with children returning back to the classroom, we must keep these crossing guard positions around our schools and ensure the safety of our children and their families.

Here is my proposal to save the crossing guards: http://oakland.legistar.com/gateway.aspx?M=F&ID=4023283e-0f4b-4a89-8ef2-f478896e1b60.pdf
