OAKLAND - Mayor Libby Schaaf is representing the City of Oakland at the By All Means initiative convening at Harvard University’s Education Redesign Lab this week.
In an era of widespread disagreement on education reform, increased confidence in local control of education, and the absence of a dominant theory on where reform goes from here, visionary mayors are emerging as leaders of thought and action in defining a new role for municipalities to play in developing and educating young people, with particular attention to children living in poverty. Several mayors who are participating in both the HGSE’s By All Means Initiative and Harvard Kennedy School’s Bloomberg City Leadership Initiative are mapping out cradle-to-career pathways to success for children in their communities.
Oakland’s work in this area, specifically the launch of the Oakland Promise and the Youth Ventures Joint Powers Authority, will be featured at the biannual convening, starting today, during a public panel featuring Mayor Libby Schaaf.
