Oakland, CA – This week City of Oakland continues the court authorized work to close the Wood Street encampment. Yesterday, workers focused on deep cleaning the public right of way around Raimondi Park and planning the remainder of the operation.
31 individuals have relocated from the City-owned Wood Street parcel to shelter programs. 24 individuals have accepted shelter at the new Wood Street cabin program; six have moved to the new Safe RV Parking program and one person has self-relocated. The Wood Street Cabin program and the Safe RV Parking program have plenty of capacity; spaces are currently being held for Wood Street residents.
“Despite protests of the City’s cleaning efforts, staff and service providers have continued their hard work,” said LaTonda Simmons, Assistant City Administrator and Acting Homelessness Administrator. “The City's priority continues to be connecting all interested individuals to safe shelter and supportive services in order to allow the City-owned parcel to be developed for 170 units of permanent affordable housing.”
Staff from OakDOT’s Vehicle Enforcement Unit have towed 23 vehicles, including five stolen vehicles. City crews have removed a total of 87 tons of trash and debris from the public right of way. Teams from Oakland Animal Services have rescued a total of 34 cats and kittens from individuals requesting assistance.
City outreach teams continue to engage with encampment residents one by one to offer a range of housing and shelter options, employment support, and other services and programs and to identify items that can be taken to storage in accordance with the City’s Encampment Management Policy.
