Re-Imagining & Expanding Public Safety
- Led City Council budget amendments to preserve and expand critical community safety measures such as funding 678 police officer positions, Crime Reduction Teams, graduating three academies, 911 dispatch, and expanding community ambassadors to support small business in more neighborhoods across Oakland through the FY ‘24-25 Mid-cycle Budget.
- Led investments of $2.85M more in violence prevention programs in the FY ‘23-25 Biennial Budget, including $600,000 focused on sex trafficking, $10M more for traffic safety improvements, and $1M for Community Ambassadors in commercial corridors.
- Augmented the Department of Violence Prevention’s budget in Fiscal Years 2021 - 2023 providing $17 million more for violence intervention, gender-based outreach, and community healing in our neighborhoods and schools
- Co-authored legislation that created a non-police alternative crisis response program in the Fire Department (MACRO - Mobile Assistance Community Responders of Oakland) to respond to mental health, non-violent 911 calls for service
- Funded Community Ambassadors programs citywide, to expand community-led safety solutions in business corridors and neighborhoods especially impacted by violence, including $1M allocated in the FY ‘23-25 Biennial Budget and $1.5M in the FY ‘24-25 Midcycle Budget.
- Focused resources on ending human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation of minors by targeting enforcement towards exploiters, expanding services for victims and survivors, and improving street lighting and traffic calming in impacted neighborhoods
- Defended immigrant and refugee rights by passing several resolutions condemning deportations of rehabilitated Southeast Asian refugee community members and successfully advocating for pardons by Gov. Gavin Newsom
- Led a task force to reimagine public safety in Oakland focused on improving public safety, reinvesting in critical human services, and supporting holistic wellness and safety
