Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation

The Oakland Police Department (OPD) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred this afternoon, just after 12:45 PM, in the area of 105th Avenue and International Boulevard.

Prior to the shooting, an OPD Traffic Officer observed a motorcyclist driving recklessly in the area of 98th Avenue and Bancroft Avenue. The traffic officer did not pursue the motorcyclist. However, the officer notified OPD’s helicopter (ARGUS) which followed the motorcyclist as he continued to drive recklessly throughout various parts of East Oakland.

Later the motorcyclist was involved in a solo vehicle crash in the area of 105th Avenue and International Boulevard. Following the crash, the motorcyclist fled on foot, eastbound towards 107th Avenue and International Boulevard, where he attempted an armed carjacking.

Officers in the area gave verbal commands for the individual to drop the firearm. The individual did not comply with the officers’ commands. For the safety of the victim and our community, officers discharged their firearms and struck the armed individual.

Medical personnel arrived on scene and transported the individual to a local hospital where he was last listed in stable condition.

The victim, nor the officers, were physically injured during this incident.

In accordance with Department policy, the officers have been placed on paid administrative leave.

Anytime there is an officer-involved shooting in our community, OPD recognizes the incident impacts families, residents of our community, and officers.

Consistent with Departmental policy, this officer-involved shooting is under the investigation of the Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Section, Internal Affairs Division, and the Oakland Community Police Review Agency (CPRA).
