Dozens of children were taking part in a youth football practice on February 24, 2021, when a shooting occurred. Around 5:36 PM, the Oakland Police Department Communications Division received a 911 call stating the shooting happened at Concordia Park in the 2900 block of 64th Avenue.

Upon arrival, Oakland Police Officers located a male victim (non-Oakland resident) with a gunshot wound. An off-duty firefighter attempted life-saving measures, unfortunately, the victim succumbed to his injuries on scene.

Oakland Police Homicide Investigators responded to the scene and began the follow-up investigation into the circumstances surrounding the apparent homicide.

“As a community member and parent this is one of my biggest fears,” says Oakland Police Chief LeRonne L. Armstrong. “This brazen daytime shooting put dozens of youth, their parents, loved ones, and surrounding community members in jeopardy. My plea is the same as I asked in my swearing-in as Chief, our community and our City must come together and stand with the members of OPD as we all work towards ending violence in Oakland,” said Armstrong.

Community members and residents provided crucial information as well as, video to help officers identify the individual we believe is responsible for this crime. That individual later turned themselves in at the San Leandro Police Department.

The City of Oakland is working with local agencies to offer grief counselors to the youth football team affected by the shooting.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification to the next of kin. This is an ongoing investigation and anyone with information can contact the Homicide Section at (510) 238-3821 or the TIP LINE at (510) 238-7950.

OPD encourages residents and business owners to consider installing security cameras as well as alarms. These technologies can both deter crime and help solve crimes after they occur. http://bit.ly/3pRGlCD

#OPDCARES initiative is about working together as a community to help stop the tragic loss of life and reduce the level of violence in our city. Collectively, we want to ensure Oaklanders and our visitors are safe in our community. When there is a loss of life in Oakland, it impacts us all.
