OPD Denounces Discriminatory and Hateful Statements
The Oakland Police Department (OPD) is investigating an incident involving a probationary City of Oakland employee. The employee has been released from probation and is no longer employed by the City.
On February 2, 2024, OPD became aware of a series of racist, bigoted, and derogatory statements in social media posts made nearly 12 years ago, allegedly by the probationary employee. These statements were brought to the attention of OPD by a local media outlet. OPD immediately launched an Internal Affairs investigation and made the determination to relieve the probationary officer of their duties.
Racism and bigotry are completely contrary to our core values and discrimination and hate speech will not be tolerated under any circumstances. OPD is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of integrity and accountability.
OPD reaffirms its commitment to fostering an inclusive community and work environment where all people are treated with dignity and respect.
OPD is collaborating with the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office to investigate any and all criminal cases that may be impacted by the probationary employee’s conduct.
OPD is also investigating our hiring and screening procedures to ensure that the values of potential employees are in alignment with the city and the department.
OPD’s message to the community can be seen at the link below.
