OPD Discovers Illegal Sale of Cannabis and Tobacco Products to Minors
The Oakland Police Department Alcohol Beverage and Tobacco (ABAT) Unit responded to a complaint made by a resident regarding illegal activities at a store in the 3300 block of MacArthur Boulevard. The complaint alleged the illegal sale of cannabis and tobacco products to minors.
On March 27, 2024, officers conducted a site visit to confirm the presence of tobacco products displayed and available for sale on the store shelves. During the investigation, officers learned the store lacked valid licenses issued by both the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) and the City of Oakland.
Officers also recovered psychedelic mushrooms, marijuana, and a variety of THC products, including edibles, vapes, and wax were discovered within the store. A loaded firearm was also seized during the operation.
While no arrests were made during the investigation, the case will be forwarded to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for charging. The Oakland City Attorney’s Office will also pursue additional legal action.
OPD remains committed to working with our community members, focusing on educating store owners about the serious consequences associated with selling unlawful flavored tobacco products to those who are under the legal age of 21. The special enforcement provides an opportunity to keep the youth in our communities safe while holding smoke shops and business owners accountable for harmful and illegal activity.
