OPD Gives Hundreds of Backpacks Away at Annual Event
Today, the Oakland Police Department (OPD) held its second annual OPD CommUNITY Tour Backpack Giveaway. As part of OPD Acts of Kindness, members of the department gave 500 backpacks filled with school supplies to Oakland students.
The third and final CommUNITY Tour of 2023 is part of a series of events where OPD hosts block parties in different areas of the city. These events are part of OPD’s dedication to giving back to our city as we continue to build trusting relationships, making the city of Oakland safer together.
At this year’s event, more than 1000 children and families attended the OPD CommUNITY Tour, where members of OPD staff prepared food, conducted science experiments, played games, and even Interim Chief Darren Allison and staff painted children’s fingernails.
Oakland barbers donated their time and services by providing dozens of free haircuts for children, just in time for back to school.
A special thank you to our community partners: the Oakland Police Foundation, Lend A Hand Foundation, Christopher Lavell Jones Foundation, Oakland Chinatown Improvement Council, Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, Oakland Black Officers Association, Oakland Asian Police Officers Association, Little Saigon Merchants, Bonneville International, and Bimbo Bakeries for their generous donations to this year’s event.
