OPD NEWS:
OPD is Investigating a Hate Crime
The Oakland Police Department (OPD) is investigating a hate crime. On February 19, 2024, just before 12:30 PM, officers were dispatched to the 500 block of El Embarcadero to investigate a report of vandalism to City of Oakland property.
Upon arrival, officers observed the Pergola at Lake Merritt was defaced with spray paint. The vandalism consisted of multiple phrases which appear to be connected to current conflicts in the Middle East. Officers determined that on an unknown date, at an unknown time, an unknown individual(s) defaced City of Oakland property.
Our officers are trained to respond to these matters with sensitivity, respect, and a commitment to upholding the principles of justice.
We encourage community members and visitors to report any instances of hate speech, hate crimes, or incidents of hate, promptly to our Hate Crime Tipline at (510) 637-4283, or the Department’s non-emergency phone number at (510) 777-3333. This tipline provides a direct reporting tool for victims and witnesses of hate crimes.
To ensure the safety of our community, we remain in close contact with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners. OPD will continue to closely assess whether there is a need to increase police presence. Our commitment to the safety and well-being of our community remains unwavering.
Oakland Public Works (OPW) has removed the graffiti at Lake Merritt related to this crime. Anyone who comes across additional graffiti on public property is encouraged to report it to OAK311 by dialing 311 or (510) 615-5566, or online at 311.oaklandca.gov.
