OPD is Investigating Multiple Violent Crimes Over the July 4th Weekend

The Oakland Police Department (OPD) is investigating multiple homicides and shootings over the July 4th, holiday weekend.

The first homicide occurred on July 1, 2022, just after 11:45 PM, near the intersection of 30th Avenue and International Boulevard. Officers responded to the area after hearing gunshot(s) near this location.

When officers arrived, officers located an adult male, with an apparent gunshot wound(s). Unfortunately, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The second homicide occurred on July 4, 2022, just after 12:30 AM, in the 300 block of Perkins Street. OPD Communications Division received a 9-1-1 call from a community member requesting a welfare check on a family member.

When officers arrived, they located a 27-year-old, male and a 25-year-old, female deceased inside the residence, both with a gunshot wound(s).

OPD Homicide Section has classified this incident as a murder-suicide. Officers recovered the weapon at the scene and do not believe there are any outstanding individuals involved in this incident.

The third homicide occurred just before 11:30 PM on July 4, 2022, in the 8700 block of Dowling Street, where officers were dispatched to reports of a shooting.

When officers arrived, officers located a vehicle collision in which the driver, an adult male, sustained a gunshot wound(s). Medical personnel arrived on the scene to provide aid. Unfortunately, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Investigators estimated more than 100 rounds were fired at this scene with multiple firearms used.

We are asking for the public’s help in identifying the individual(s) responsible for the homicides and people who may have witnessed these incidents.

OPD is also investigating a shooting that occurred on July 4, 2022, just after 8:30 PM, in the 2500 block of 26th Avenue.

When officers arrived, they located a three-year-old child with an apparent gunshot wound(s) to the torso. Due to the severity of the injuries, officers elected to immediately transport the child to the hospital in their patrol vehicle for treatment.

The child is listed in critical, but stable condition. Medical staff advised OPD, that if the officers had not transported the child, the three-year-old probably would not have survived.

We are investigating a possible relative’s involvement in this shooting.

OPD is also investigating firearm-related injuries that occurred on July 4, 2022, after 9:30 PM, in the 7000 block of Coliseum Way.

Following last night’s Oakland A’s postgame fireworks show, officers were notified of a possible shooting victim inside the ballpark. During the preliminary investigation, officers

contacted three victims struck by bullet fragments, either on the field or in the stands.

A fourth victim later walked into a local hospital. The shootings appeared to be a result of celebratory gunfire occurring throughout the city of Oakland.

Today, a fifth victim contacted the Department regarding their injuries.

All victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

OPD will continue working closely with the Oakland A’s Security to ensure the safety of all those attending future A’s games at the Coliseum.

The Oakland Police Department and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering a reward in all of the homicides and shootings for information leading to an arrest(s).

Lastly, just after 11:15 pm, on July 4th, illegal sideshow activity occurred in the City of Oakland, where upwards of 200 vehicles were involved in illegal sideshow activity. Officers were able to disrupt the illegal activity and tow 27 vehicles.

This holiday weekend, OPD recovered 12 firearms, half of which were recovered on the 4th of July.

Chief LeRonne L. Armstrong wants to acknowledge the hard work of the women and men of the Oakland Police Department, who worked overtime to add extra resources and safety measures for the residents, visitors, and businesses of Oakland. Chief Armstrong said, “Although we did see firework activity on the holiday, it was less than we experienced last year. The vast majority of our city enjoyed a safe 4th of July holiday weekend.”

So far this year OPD has investigated 57 homicides, compared to 66 this time last year. Officers have also recovered more than 860 firearms this year, for 42% increase over the same time last year.
