The City of Oakland experienced multiple illegal Sideshows over the weekend. On Saturday night, the Oakland Police Department (OPD) Communications Division received numerous reports of unlawful sideshow activity.

Around midnight, officers responded to the area of Grand Avenue and Lake Park Avenue, where they observed approximately 300 vehicles and 200 spectators engaged in illegal sideshow activity. As additional officers arrived on scene, the crowd moved to the area of 5th Street and Adeline Street. The crowd dispersed to other parts of Oakland before heading to nearby cities.

However, officers in OPD’s helicopter (ARGUS) followed the crowd throughout the city, and working with officers on the ground, OPD conducted seven traffic stops, which led to the arrest of five individuals, the recovery of three firearms, and the towing of three vehicles.

Officers are following up to identify additional vehicles that took part in this illegal activity. Once identified, investigators may go to the homes where the vehicles are registered and tow those vehicles.

OPD continues to partner with community groups, local and state law enforcement agencies, and other city departments to develop long-term solutions to address illegal sideshows and violent crimes in Oakland.
