OPD Provides Updates on Several Homicide Investigations
The members of the Oakland Police Department have made significant progress in several homicide investigations within our city. Today, we would like to provide updates on five cases.
Case 1:
At approximately 9:00 p.m. on December 30, 2024, Oakland Police Department (OPD) patrol officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the 4300 block of Fleming Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found Kody Johnston suffering from a gunshot wound(s). Johnston was transported to an area hospital, where he died.
On January 31, 2025, investigators arrested Juan Montiel, and the Alameda County District Attorney's Office charged him for his role in the homicide.
Case 2:
Just after 7:00 a.m. on December 31, 2024, OPD patrol officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 1300 block of 14th Street. When officers arrived, they found Willie Bernstine suffering from gunshot wounds, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
On February 4, 2025, Joseph Westbrook was arrested for his involvement in the killing. During the arrest and subsequent execution of search warrants, three assault rifles and four pistols were recovered (pictured above left). The Alameda County District Attorney's Office charged Westbrook with his role in the homicide.
Case 3:
Just before midnight on January 2, 2025, officers were dispatched to the 2200 block of East 12th Street to investigate a shooting and vehicle collision. When officers arrived, they found Darnesha Williams had been shot while inside a stolen vehicle. Williams was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.
On February 11, 2025, Lanae Adams was arrested for her involvement in the crime. During the arrest and subsequent execution of search warrants, two pistols and one assault rifle were recovered. The case is expected to be presented to The Alameda County District Attorney's Office for charges this week.
Case 4:
Around 8:00 p.m. on January 26, 2025, officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation and reports of illegal Sideshow activities in the 900 block of East 12th Street. They found an unoccupied stolen vehicle with bullet holes abandoned in the middle of the road. Multiple gunshot victims, including Ethan Pereira, arrived at local hospitals. Pereira later died at the hospital.
On February 5, 2025, a juvenile suspect and his co-defendant, Leonardo Perez Baltazar, were arrested. During the arrests, one rifle and three pistols were recovered (pictured above right). The Alameda County District Attorney's Office charged both suspects with their involvement in the homicide and various firearms-related offenses.
Case 5:
On March 18, 2023, at approximately 5:08 a.m., Ms. Yolanda Calmo-Lorenzo was shot inside her residence on the 1400 block of 84th Avenue while lying in bed next to her young child. Investigators identified her boyfriend, Jeronimo Pablo Carrillo, as the suspect.
After nearly two years, on January 31, 2025, the United States Marshals located and arrested Carrillo in Jackson, Michigan. The Alameda County District Attorney's Office has charged Carrillo for his involvement with the homicide.
The Oakland Police Department is grateful for the community's ongoing support, the collaboration of local and federal law enforcement agencies, and the critical roles of our officers in these investigations.
We continue to work closely with the Department of Violence Prevention as part of our Ceasefire Strategy to prevent group and gang violence, reduce retaliation, and interrupt cycles of violence within the community.
