OPD’s Violence Suppression Deemed Fruitful
The Oakland Police Department (OPD) Area 5 Violence Suppression is committed to proactive law enforcement efforts to make Oakland safer.
On March 3, 2024, just after 3:00 PM, officers working violence suppression in East Oakland were in the 5900 block of International Boulevard when they observed an individual believed to be brandishing a firearm. The officers contacted the individual and attempted to detain them; however, the individual did not comply. Following a brief struggle, the officers safely took the individual into custody and located a loaded firearm with an extended magazine. The individual was arrested on multiple firearm related offenses.
The following Sunday, the same two officers responded to multiple ShotSpotter activations in the 900 block of 77th Avenue. As they approached, the officers observed a vehicle fleeing from the area at a high rate of speed. The officers followed the vehicle at a safe distance, during which they witnessed the driver violating several vehicle codes. The officers conducted an enforcement stop in the 7800 block of International Boulevard, where they detained both occupants of the vehicle. One of the individuals was in possession of a firearm and was arrested for multiple firearm-related offenses.
The arrests and recovery of these firearms are a testament to the commitment and diligence of OPD in combating gun violence. OPD remains dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community members.
