New and restored services are both here and on the way for the City of Oakland and the Oakland community to team-up to give neighborhood streets and sidewalks some much-needed spring cleaning. First up: the City’s proactive hot spot cleanups are getting a boost from increased staffing for Oakland Public Works’ (OPW) Garbage Blitz Crews.

Residents and businesses can help minimize flooding in their neighborhood by volunteering with the City’s Adopt-A-Drain program to keep a storm drain near their home or business free of debris. About 1,100 storm drains are currently adopted by Oaklanders, but many thousands more are waiting to be adopted. By signing up, you will receive storm notification emails before large storm events, and the City can provide rakes, brooms, dust pans, bags and other supplies. In a growing effort to provide cleaner streets and sidewalks in Oakland neighborhoods, the City of Oakland will resume parking management operations November 9.

Volunteers and community members are invited to join in watershed education, pledges, and actions for the 25^th annual Oakland Creek to Bay event throughout the month of September.

The City of Oakland and Waste Management of Alameda County Inc., announced today that curbside bulky pickup services will resume July 1, providing all Oakland residents an opportunity to dispose of large unwanted items at no charge by simply making an appointment and placing items curbside before 6 a.m. on their scheduled bulky pickup day. Residents can contact Waste Management now at (510) 613-8710 to schedule a curbside pickup.

Oakland Public Works (OPW) announced today that after several weeks of diminished capacity to clean Oakland’s streets and sidewalks, the department is restoring and reinforcing clean-up work with new support and returning staff. The City asks that community members help identify new or returned hot-spot areas by continuing to report illegal dumping to OAK311, and make full use of available trash services as part of the ongoing Oaktown PROUD community campaign to reduce illegal dumping in Oakland.

The City of Oakland and Waste Management of Alameda County Inc., announced today a temporary service available to Oakland residents to dispose of large unwanted items at no charge, if they can self-haul those items to Waste Management’s Davis Street transfer station in San Leandro.

April 2020 marks the 26th annual Oakland Earth Day, and the 50th nationwide anniversary of Earth Day. Oakland has a storied history of volunteers pitching in by the thousands to clean, green, and beautify the City. Although the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic prevents gathering in person like when one in ten Americans did on that first Earth Day, or like Oaklanders have traditionally done to volunteer, the Oakland community is still organizing from home to take actions for the Earth.

Oakland Public Works has recently completed the renovation of Hardy Park, also known in the community as FROG Park after the community group Friends of the Greenbelt. OPW and FROG celebrated Sunday with a ribbon cutting and grand opening.
