Passing our first emergency ordinance to protect renters from displacement

Councilmember Bas introduced and passed her first piece of legislation, an emergency ordinance co-sponsored by Councilmember McElhaney to protect tenants from potential displacement, as well as to ensure accurate information to tenants and landlords.

To help ensure everyone in Oakland has shelter and to protect our neighbors from displacement, on February 8th Councilmember Bas introduced her first piece of legislation, co-sponsored by Councilmember Lynette Gibson McElhaney.

On February 14, 2019, City Council voted to pass this emergency ordinance to create a moratorium on rent increases for owner-occupied duplexes and triplexes. After hearing from the public over many weeks, Councilmember Bas introduced this ordinance to act immediately to protect tenants from potential displacement, as well as to ensure accurate information to tenants and landlords.
