The Mayor’s 2017 Q3 & Q4 Police Accountability Report

This is the Principled Policing Report for the second half of 2017. The purpose of the report is to bring greater transparency to police data and outline how the City of Oakland’s Police Department (OPD) is managing and meeting its accountability goals.

Most notably, compared to our base reporting period of –July to December 2012:

  • OPD has decreased its Use of Force by 79%. From July 1 to December 31, 2017, OPD saw its greatest decline for Use of Force in over five years. (page 13);
  • No officer discipline has been reversed by arbitration for three years (page 10); and
  • OPD has reduced the number of Police Misconduct Legal Claims by 74% (page 15).
