Public Safety Advisory: People Identifying Themselves as Police
The Oakland Police Department (OPD) has seen two recent residential robberies in East Oakland, where suspects dressed in plain clothes verbally identify themselves as police officers. To keep our community informed and safe, we are issuing this safety advisory.
In several recent cases, one to four unknown suspects have broken into residences, searched, and demanded items from the victims. When confronted or questioned about their identity, the suspects announce “OPD,” and another incident announces “police” as they enter the residence.
OPD is actively investigating and tracking this current trend, and commanders have begun deploying additional officers to areas of the city that have experienced this surge.
OPD is encouraging anyone who is a victim or has information regarding any of these incidents to please call 510-238-3326.
OPD SAFETY TIPS:
- OPD officers will knock and announce their presence.
- OPD officers will be in clothing that clearly identifies them as law enforcement officers.
- OPD plainclothes officers do not force entry into residences.
- Don’t resist.
- Trust your instincts. If in doubt, call 911.
Working together, we can make Oakland Safer!!
