The Coliseum and Arena have continued to thrive, hosting a variety of live, sold-out events that have generated significant revenue and created this opportunity. As a result, on January 17th, I voted alongside my fellow Coliseum Authority commissioners to authorize the return of $2.6 million each, to the City of Oakland and the County of Alameda respectively.

UC Berkeley researchers found that Bay Area soda taxes, combined with media attention, have significantly shifted social norms, reducing the acceptability of sugar-sweetened beverages and leading to lower consumption in several cities, including Oakland. This shift in public perception is seen as a powerful tool for improving public health, similar to the decline in smoking rates after tobacco taxes and education campaigns.

The Oakland Police Department (OPD) Alcohol Beverage Action Team (ABAT) and California Department of Tax and Fees (CDTFA) conducted joint inspections into an unlicensed smoke shop on December 27, 2024, in the 2400 block of San Pablo Avenue.

Progress against discrimination has been made, but underlying systems persist. Historic planning and policies harmed racially representative areas, leading to distrust in city government. In response, Oakland established the Department of Race and Equity in 2016 to address racial disparities and foster a vision of diversity and equity. This move acknowledges a need to undo harm and achieve racial equity, reflecting a city grappling with its complex legacy and striving for transformative change toward fairness and inclusion.

ABAT

The Oakland Police Department (OPD) Alcohol Beverage Action Team (ABAT) investigated a licensed smoke shop in East Oakland. On December 5, 2024, the ABAT team and officers assigned to the Eastend Foot Patrol were acting on tips from community members that illegal activity was taking place at the shop in the 8500 block of Bancroft Avenue.

Claijion Bundy Case

The Oakland Police Department (OPD) is asking for the community’s assistance in solving the homicide of Claijion Tolbert-Bundy, which occurred on November 20, 2021, in the 3900 block of Carrington Avenue. Tolbert-Bundy was 17 years old at the time of his death.
