Lake Merritt Channel Improvements at 10th Street

Construction Status - Updated October 2016

Spring 2017 - Completion anticipated
November 2016 – Removal of the Channel Culvert pending weather (continuous for 7 days from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
July 2015 - Start of Phase 2 (northern half of 10th Street Bridge)
December 2015 - Completion of Phase 1 (southern half of 10th Street Bridge)
June 2013 - Construction started

Scope of Work

The existing culverts at the Lake Merritt Channel will be replaced with a clear-spanning vehicle/pedestrian bridge.
The channel at 10th Street will be dredged and widened to 100 foot clear span, which will improve the natural tidal circulation into Lake Merritt and enhance water quality and wildlife habitat.
Pedestrian, bicycle and small boat access from Lake Merritt along the Lake Merritt Channel Park will be included, allowing eventual access to the Bay Trail and Oakland waterfront.
The bridge will accommodate two traffic lanes, two bicycle lanes and sidewalks on both sides.
The bridge will compliment the design of the new bridge at 12th Street.
Pedestrian pathways along the channel under the 10th Street Bridge will have adequate clearance for bicycle/pedestrian traffic to pass underneath.
Approach work along 10th Street extends from the Kaiser Convention Center to approximately 100 feet east of the 2nd Avenue intersection.
Special consideration shall be given to the following constraints:
Right-of-way width limitations
Disruptions to community activities
Extensive utility relocation work
Coordination with other projects in the area
