The City of Oakland is implementing a suite of pedestrian and bicycle safety treatments on Claremont Avenue and Shattuck Avenue, under a federal grant through the Highway Safety Improvement Program. The improvements include: installing new traffic signage and striping road diet with bike lanes on Claremont Avenue; installing uncontrolled crosswalk enhancements with ladder crosswalks; installing Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacons (RRFB); constructing sidewalk bulb-outs to shorten intersection crossings for pedestrians; installing ADA-compliant curb ramps; constructing median refuges at multiple locations; and installing a protected left-turn at the intersection of Shattuck Ave and Alcatraz Ave.
9/29 Update:
OakDOT staff are currently reviewing the striping configuration on Shattuck Avenue regarding new parking impacts. Staff are working on a solution to restore some parking along the two blocks that were recently removed. Unfortunately it will not be possible to remove the left-turn pocket due to the upgraded signal at the intersection of Shattuck Ave & Alcatraz Ave. Staff understand that this configuration is currently affecting many of our residents who live in the area and hope to implement a revised parking plan soon.
