The West Oakland 14th Street Project aims to reduce excessive speeding and improve safety on 14th Street between Mandela Parkway and Brush Street.
This part of 14th Street was identified as a high-injury corridor as part of both OakDOT's 2024 High Injury Network and the 2018 High Injury Network (PDF, 12.8 MB). There were multiple crashes that resulted in traffic deaths in 2015, 2016, and 2022, where speeding and aggressive driving were contributing factors.

Designing for Safety
OakDOT staff identified a road diet as a way to improve safety on 14th Street. A road diet on 14th Street will remove one travel lane in each direction. This leaves one travel lane in each direction for cars, as well as one buffered bike lane in each direction.
Previously, in 2021, the project was awarded $1.57M from the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP Cycle 10) for pedestrian crossing improvements at Mandela Parkway, Poplar Street, Magnolia Street, and Adeline Street. Local funding will contribute to additional intersection treatments at Union Street and Filbert Street.
There may be physical changes to intersections, including bus boarding islands, protected intersections, and pedestrian flashing beacons at crosswalks. Signal changes may include protected left turns, new pedestrian signal heads, and leading pedestrian intervals (LPIs).
