Clean and Safe City Q&A - Fire

Can we be proactive in vegetation management and fire risk?

The Oakland Fire Department has one of the most comprehensive wildfire prevention programs in California. Annually OFD directly inspects over 25,000+ private and city-owned parcels, it conducts year-round fuel mitigation on thousands of acres in the hills, and execute many miles of roadside clearing projects, and deploy one of the largest herd of goats in the state to mitigate and remove hard to reach, hazardous combustible fuels. Over the last three years, the Fire and Public Works Department have jointly been awarded nearly $2.5 Million dollars in fire prevention grants to to remove hundreds of dead and dying trees along evacuation routes in the city’s high fire risk areas.

Dumping occurs in less populated areas where fire risk is high. What is Oakland doing to monitor, capture, fine and prevent this growing safety and fire risk?

The Fire Department makes regular referrals to OAK311 and OAK DOT to mitigate illegal dumping and to initiate the removal of cars.

How will fire prevention measure fund be protected from reallocation by City Council?

The ballot measure is written with specific language that stipulates that any funding from the measure is not at risk of being cut or re-allocated by the city to meet other needs.

Why is OFD increasing fire inspections and fees on apartment complexes?

Any increase in cost of inspections is to keep up with the city’s Master Fee Schedule that is approved by City Council.
