Clean and Safe City Q&A - MACRO

What interventions do we have for mental illness community?

There are multiple interventions for individuals experiencing mental illness including:

  • The primary resource is Alameda County Behavioral Health (https://www.acbhcs.org/)
  • For individuals experiencing a mental health crisis contact Alameda County Crisis Support Services (https://www.crisissupport.org/

What is 20-year projection for MACRO program? Is East Oakland included in this?

The 20-year projection for the MACRO program is that it further integrates into the Fire Department. This will include Co-locating with a newly built fire station 4. Co-locating MACRO with the Fire Department will help demonstrate a commitment to support MACRO indefinitely. MACRO is a key part of the public safety fabric in the City of Oakland. MACRO has been servicing East Oakland since the launch of the program in April 2022.  MACRO expanded the service area to include all of Oakland in August of 2022 after six months of service.

What are the stats?

Below find a table of general statistics for 2024. More detailed reports will be posted on the MACRO Website in the future.

Why should we invest in MACRO? Should the Department of Violence Prevention do this work?

The Department of Violence Prevention (DVP) has a different mission and delivery model than MACRO. MACRO is designed to reduce the pressure on police and fire resources. MACRO does this by responding to non-violent and non- criminal quality of life calls. By partnering with law enforcement and violence prevention, we can have a complete public safety infrastructure meaning all challenges can be resolved by the appropriate teams.

Does MACRO help with interrupting prostitution?

No, MACRO does not help with interrupting prostitution.

What percentage of OPD and OFD calls are for unhoused?

I would like MACRO to be more active in my community (Fruitvale)

Fruitvale is included in MACRO Zone 6. The table below indicates the number and percentage of responses per zone for 2024. It shows that MACRO responses are fairly even throughout the city. MACRO regularly responds to requests at the Fruitvale Transit Village, Cesar Chavez Library, Josie De La Cruz, and Peralta Hacienda Park. Our deployment is designed to ensure there is a team covering the area daily. We regularly drive down Foothill and International Blvd looking for anyone in need. If there is a specific request please contact MACRO by phone at (510)44 –MACRO / (510)446-2276 or by email at MACRO@oaklandca.gov
