Each year, the federal government (HUD) grants funding to the City of Oakland Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. CDBG then distributes these funds to local community organizations for various development projects.
The Community Development Block Grant program develops urban communities by providing decent housing, suitable living environments, and expanding economic opportunities, for persons of low- and moderate-income.
How the CDBG Program Helps Oakland
Oakland's CDBG program focuses mainly on physical development activities: community-wide housing, public facilities and improvements, neighborhood revitalization and economic development.
A restricted portion of the grant funds can be spent on public services activities, identified by the Consolidated Plan.
