Volunteer for the Foster Grandparent Program

Since 1965, Foster Grandparent volunteers have shared their wisdom and experience with children. Utilizing the time, talents and compassion of retiree volunteers to help mentor youth has proven to be an effective model.

Volunteers play a significant role in increasing one-on-one attention to at-risk and struggling children and providing the much needed attention for helping children’s self-esteem and success. Foster Grandparents are role models, mentors and friends whom children and youth come to depend on and who can change their lives for the better.

Volunteer Eligibility

  • You must live in Alameda County;
  • You must be 55 or older;
  • Able to volunteer an average of 15-20 hours per week;
  • Have a limited income; and
  • Love working with children!

Foster Grandparent Program is a part of the national Senior Corps of the Corporation for National and Community Service and is sponsored locally by the City of Oakland, Human Services Department.
