2022 Building Standards Code Changes

Every three years, the State adopts new building model codes to establish uniform standards for construction and maintenance. Changes to the model code affect all new building permit applications submitted on or after January 1st, 2023. Please review the summary documents below outlining code updates, including residential, electrical, plumbing and mechanical codes.

Protecting Residential Hotels (SROs) as Housing

Residential Hotels (SROs) are an essential component of the City’s supply of Naturally Occurring Affordable Housing (NOAH), as they are a flexible and easily accessible form of housing that provides very low, and extremely low-income residents the ability to remain in Oakland and avoid homelessness. To that end, on December 4, 2018, the Oakland City Council adopted new Planning Code Chapter 17.153, which regulates the conversion, demolition, rehabilitation and sale of Residential Hotels to protect this important type of housing.

Traffic Safety

A person is severely injured or killed in a traffic crash two times a week on Oakland’s streets. The City of Oakland Department of Transportation is working to prevent crashes, save lives and improve mobility for everyone who travels on Oakland's streets and sidewalks.

Building Plan Check Services

The Plan Check Services division of Building Bureau offers a team of in-house engineers to review and answer questions pertaining to submitted plans. To better serve Oakland residents and customers, Plan Check Engineers are available for drop-in consultations and during the specified hours shown below.

2020 Census Key Dates

Residents can expect to receive mailed invitations to participate in the 2020 Census in March 2020. Census Day is on April 1, 2020, but you will have the opportunity to submit your responses online or over the phone beginning in mid-March 2020.

#OaklandCounts 2020 Census

Every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau is required to count every person living in the United States, regardless of citizenship status. In March-April 2020, Oakland residents will participate in the next decennial census count ensuring that our community receives its share of federal funding that supports education, housing, health, transportation, and other critical programs that make Oakland thrive.
