Cultural Funding Program

The City of Oakland Cultural Funding Program distributes over $1 million through a competitive grant-funding process to Oakland-based art and cultural activities that reflect the diversity of the city.

Public Art in Oakland

Public Art enlivens, enriches and enhances our visual environment and public spaces. The best public art creates a focal point for activity, a meeting place or a landmark -- and lets residents and visitors enjoy the tremendous creative talent found in our city.

All Walking Tours have been suspended indefinitely.

Vibrant Hospitality Sector

The city’s tourism industry continues to be an important engine for growth, supporting more than 7,100 local jobs. In 2016, a record 3.7 million visitors generated an estimated $827 million of economic impact in Oakland. Leisure, hospitality, and retail employment has grown significantly in the past five years, as reflected in national attention on the food and arts scene.

Green Industries

Consistently rated among the top ten greenest cities in the United States, Oakland is at the forefront of the green economy.

International Trade and Transportation

Oakland's attributes combine to position the city as one of the most important international trade markets in the world. The first new facilities of the Oakland Global Trade and Logistics Center will open this year, increasing the Port’s capacity. Transportation, Wholesale Trade, Logistics and related sectors employ more than 25,000 in Oakland.

Nurturing Oakland's Tech Environment

Whether through music, art, search, commerce or software, Oakland-based tech companies reach millions of global users. From large and long-lasting companies like Pandora and Ask.com/Ask.fm to innovative startups like Mayvenn and Captricity, tech companies in Oakland find a supportive local ecosystem with excellent access to Silicon Valley resources.

Retail

Oakland has 55 shopping districts and more than 50 regional and national retailers. Many areas in the city are known for unique boutiques, art galleries, and pop-up shops created by ambitious local entrepreneurs and artisans selling locally made, one-of-a-kind Oakland products.Major mixed-use project now underway will bring significant ground floor retail to the market. Overall, the CIty's retail vacancy rate is under 3% in 2015. Oakland's retail sector employs more than 10,000 people, after adding about 1,500 jobs between 2008-2016.

Youth Employment and Training

We're working to help Oakland Youth find a job this summer. There are resources for both youth job-seekers and businesses looking to hire youth.

The Oakland Workforce Development Board (OWDB) funds and supports a variety of programs that provide training, mentoring and educational enrichment to Oakland youth ages 16 to 21.
